ABC Wednesday - C

C is for coasters.

These are some that we have collected over the years. The top square one is of a set of 4 given to us by friends. The white round set on the right we bought in Nelson, New Zealand and the wooden Australia shape in the centre came from Adelaide. The veteran car coasters are plastic and quite old themselves but it is the curious orange one that has the story.

As well as having a late night chat show, Graham Norton hosts a radio show on Saturday mornings and part of the show is "Tune with a Tale" - the clue is in the title! To take part in the show you have to suggest a tune that has a story to tell. I decided to apply and to my surprise, within a few days, was asked to take part on a particular week. The programme was live and I was able to chat to Graham Norton for a few minutes before my chosen tune was played. I was very nervous but he was very friendly and put me at my ease. For my trouble I received a set of coasters. He jokes about the quality of the coasters and once I received them I wrote to say that I was lost for words when I saw them. He read my comment out on the radio and chuckled and said "I hear what you are saying Anne".

My choice of song was Country and Western - "Rock and Roll I gave you the best years of my Life".

An Evening at the Theatre

On Wednesday evening husband and I went to the theatre to see Miriam Margolyes in her one woman stage show "Dickens' Women". She is reprising her Olivier-nominated show in a year-long world tour. Our daughter saw it in New Zealand in the Spring.

We have always enjoyed seeing her in her various roles in film and on TV and when we realised that she would be appearing at the Taunton theatre we immediately booked our seats. We were thoroughly entertained. Miss Margolyes was on stage for two hours with only a 20 minute interval and held us enthralled by her performances of some of Dickens' various fictional characters, mostly the female roles but she did include her interpretation of the Beadle in Oliver Twist. We also heard of the women in Dickens' life and his treatment of them.

We both love to watch the TV and film adaptations of Dicken's stories but somehow her performance of the chosen characters, delivered with so much depth and obvious enjoyment, has made me want to begin reading the stories for myself. (I did read some at school but not since I am almost ashamed to admit).

It was a wonderful evening, so if you are fans of the lady and of Dickens and get the chance to see this show, I can highly recommend it.

(this picture is copied from a page in "The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady", a favourite of mine)

Here I am with my twin Aunts. This photo was taken around 1948 when I was 4 and they were 20. Aren't they attractive!

Together again in 2007

and here they are at their 80th birthday party in 2008. Both are still active, happy and healthy.

An update

I telephoned a recommended "computer man" and told him my sad tale. He said it certainly sounds as though my computer needs to be cleaned and arranged to call tomorrow morning. He may have to take it away but I don't mind being without it for a few days if it means that it is trouble free.

Hope to be back with you all soon.

Problems

It's been a while since my last post and now that I have decided to really get back into it I am experiencing problems. I have been able to post a comment on some sites but when I try to look at others my computer just closes the internet connection, even when I am negotiating my own site.

I've known for a while that I need some help so I really must adddress the situation. I will keep trying and hopefully will be up and running properly soon.

Please bear with me.
