ABC Wednesday - D

D is for Donkeys

Each Tuesday for the 6 weeks of the school summer holidays husband Bob runs a Donkey Derby in aid of local charities.  This is the 29th year and in all that time there have been very few occasions when the event has been called off due to bad weather.

Today has seen darkening skies and downpours of rain, in fact at one point it was a deluge and the streets were like rivers!  However, a few minutes ago Bob set off to see if the event could take place this evening.  Fingers crossed as it is very popular and raises approximately £1,500 each week which will be split between 3 local charities.

Here is a picture of some of the donkey runners enjoying a diet of hay for their dinner (lunch)!

Great choice for D, Anne - Donkey Derbies sound like wonderful way to raise money - lots of fun for all, and the donkeys seem to be enjoying lunch!

Well, I didn't know you before, but it was very nice to meet you here. Good to read the news about your mother and husband. Yes, sleep patterns sometimes change (at least, mine have) but how brilliant to use the time to catch up with your blogging friends.

That reminds me of when I was really little. My dad was in an event called Donkey Baseball. All I remember is him trying to get the donkey to run from base to base and it didn't want to go. It was at the high school where he worked. I'm sure it was some kind of fund raiser. - Margy

That looks so appetizing on your header. Coming from the North Of England we used to call it a Jam Butty. I am just going to make one.
Love D for Donkey - I haven't ridden one for a long time - last time I did I made an 'ass' of myself at th sea side.
Great way of raising money for the Charities. Good luck with the Donkey Derby. Cheers ~ Eddie

Donkey Derby! Nice idea. I'd love to see it.
Here in Israel we never see donkeys with a saddle.
Once at Heifer Ranch in Arkansas I gradually trained a young donkey to saddle. When she was old enough I took the first ride.
Donkeys always seem to have a mind of their own. :)

Shalom and all the best to you
