ABC Wednesday - E

E is for Echidna

Apparently their young are called "puggles" - how sweet!

This post is from the archive. I took this photograph a couple of years ago at Cleland Park in South Australia but I was fortunate enough one evening, on a walk with my son in Kuitpo Forest to see one in the wild. My son had heard a noise and motioned to me to stay quiet but to follow him and there it was, trundling along through the undergrowth, oblivious of our presence. We left him to it. more details about echidnas here,

I always feel privileged when I see animals in their natural habitat and was thrilled, though slightly irritated with myself as it was one of the few occasions that I hadn't bothered to carry my camera! I am away from home this week and so I used my letter E from the last round and have scheduled it for posting.

ABC Wednesday is hosted by Mrs Denise Nesbitt and her team. For more letter E subjects - click here.

It looks like a cross between an ant-eater and a hedgehog. It never fails to impress me just how many species there are on this planet.

I love little hedge hogs and wish I had a permanent resident. I had one come and stay one year but after a few days curled up under a leafy tree base, it disappeared.

'Puggles' - it's a title for a children's book. How luck to see an echidna in its natural habitat - makes it even more special somehow.

Funny little chaps, we have one at least in residence but s/he is elusive. We see the evidence but no luck with the echidna itself. They live on ants, have plenty of those. As a result very strong claws, had one being transported dig through a poly box in one minute once.
Nice post, glad you had fun!!!
Kuitpo is up the back from where we live.
