Snowdrops

At last, under the magnolia tree in our garden yesterday, I spotted them. They have only just broken through but here they are - the first sign, for me, of spring just around the corner!

I love snowdrops. I've never been successful at growing them as our soil is heavy clay. So last October I planed a packet in a pot and yes, the first one is flowering. I took a picture of it the other day but haven't got around to posting it.

These tiny fragile little flowers are so strong and resilient. It gives us a ray of hope about spring as you say.

That's a very welcome sight! I do have some snowdrops, but they get less every year. Like Winifred, I have heavy clay soil.

I am so envious of you, all we have is snow, snow and more snow. Spring for us will be late April, early May.

I too planted some snowdrops last Fall,

Oh Wow, I'm going to dash out and see what's popping up in my garden! That's almost as good as hearing a cuckoo! Thanks SJA. xx

I've been looking out for my bulbs to appear, too. I planted a lot in autumn, and the crocuses have been visible for quite a while, but nothing else. At last I see a few more leaves appearing!

Each time I plant bulbs I fear that the mice will dig them up and eat them!

And we have clay soil, too - but I thought bulbs didn't mind that? Maybe that's why my snowdrops never do very well.

We, too, have got some snowdrops that are almost in flower plus daffodils and tulips that are poking through the soil. They are something to look forward to.

Like Gill I am in Canada and the only snowdrops we have right now are real ones - aka snowflakes. Thank you for this post; it's so nice to be reminded of spring.

Thanks to all of you for your lovely comments. I will post another photo of them when they are fully open.

Just in case any of you who have trouble growing them don't know, the best way to plant them is "in the green". If this spring you buy a plant pot of snowdrops and plant them whilst they are still flowering or just after flowering, you will stand a better chance of them coming again next year. Good luck.

You have snowdrops and we have snow. It'll be a couple of months before we see any sign of spring here in MD. Where are you?

What would be really cool is to see photos of before, middle, and after of their growth.

Though we still have flowers around here, it is slim pickings and I can't wait until spring brings forth all of the bulbs that are showing up. :-)
